And on a related topic:
Bush to pick Wolfowitz for World Bank
You mean the man who has refused to do photo shoots unless his own hair stylist is there, but who apparently is some great humanitarian -- at least with other people's money..."Damn you, developed country tax payers, forgive those loans!" --- you mean, he didn't get the job? I like U2 (you like me first, right?), but I'm no fan of Bono (he he, he said, "bone".)

I couldn't care less about Wolfy or the WB (World Bank that is -- I very much do care about my Bugs and Friends). If the World Bank disappeared tomorrow would it make a noise in the forest?

The short answer -- no.

The bigger question: Why does the US keep nominating Pentagon officials to be President of the World Bank? Wasn't McNamara enough of a disaster? A little passive-agressive action against the developing world? Yes, Cody, if the World Bank disappeared, there would be a noise in the forest - as the largest NGO funder of HIV/AIDS programs, Africa would be in far worse shape than they are now. Their lending in the 1970's was a debacle, but that has changed for the better.

Ellie, I love your feedback. Keep it coming.

PS. I think NGO's are some of the destructive and corrupt entities in the developed world.

Also, you ever see "Fog of War" or read a bio on McNamara? I'm no fan of his, but I sure like him more than say, Bonohead.

Cody,
Thanks for the compliment. I'm surprised to be commenting so frequently, though I suppose that its a good antidote for my "day" job (and i have some time on my hands between assignments now)

Yes, NGO's don't have a lily-white reputation in Africa - but I know from expereince that frequently they are using a little "expediting" to get their more important work done.

Have you read the Commission for AFrica report that was just issued in the UK? An honest, painful look at why, despite being awash in foreigh aid, African nations have largely failed to improve living conditions. If the recommendations in the report can be completed, even in half-measures, it would be remarkable.

I did see "Fog of War." What is that phrase - "drunk with power" - would seem to apply. Politicians of that era (and since) have learned too late that the cover-up is always worse than the crime.

I work for an NGO :) And, I'll admit it, I've been known to "expedite" a thing or two. All for the greater good. Back for a home visit between assignments - and catching up on my reporting.

can you elaborate on what you mean by "expedite a thing or two"? (won't judge, just trying to understand).

Not worried about the sword of Damocles taking off my head for my exceses...I have slipped a few EU or $ (out of my own pocket)to a guard at a checkpoint to avoid delays - essential with medicines that need refrigeration, for example.
